Labastide de Virac is a monument-protected village - Village de caractère - in the South of the Ardèche region. This little village has its charm from the many old quarry-stone houses, restored with care and affection, where a variety of Europeans are living. Thus you find in the neighbourhood, besides the original Ardèche inhabitants, British, Belgians, Dutch, Germans and Swiss. From Labastide you can easily walk through the protected area of the Ardèche, right down to the river. You can also take an adventurous canoeing trip on the river. In the restored castle of Labastide you can find out more about the silkworm industry which used to be so common in the area, and even see the rearing of real silkworms. There are two restaurants, La petite Auberge and Au vieux porche, both open during the season from Easter till September. All year round a farm - Le Mas de la Vielle - directly in the center of the village offers their regional specialities, food and the daily newspaper. Besides the Canyon de Ardèche sthere are grape vines, lavender fields, olive groves and the French way of life, which make this area so charming.

After Uta and Manfred Bilharz spent many of their vacations in Southern France, they decided they wanted to find a home in the area, and finally in 2000 they settled down in this little village, counting only 221 inhabitants. Their new home - La Forge - was the former smithy of the village. Here Uta and Manfred found their paradise. The three-storey building was reorganized and restored, but keeping the authentic style.

Since Uta and Manfred want to share the pleasure they have found, thanks to the French way of life, part of the smithy has been renovated and turned into an apartment. It has a living room, a bedroom, a large completely furnished kitchen, bathroom with shower and a separate toilet. It also has its own washing machine and a simple HiFi installation, all at your disposal. The following pictures show parts of the apartment.
